You will often hear me mention a “carefully controlled” or “limited” palette when talking about specific artists, particularly those working in film and gaming concept and visual development art, where limited gamuts are used to dramatic effect. When starting from a particular set of colors, the gamut is the range of colors that can be produced by mixing those colors (usually with the addition of white). It’s not a term that painters use as often, but “gamut” also applies to a painter’s palette. Those working with print reproduction are very familiar with the concept of the CMYK gamut, or the range of colors that can be reproduced using traditional Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black printing inks, a smaller subset of the colors available, for example, on a computer monitor. More specifically it is a range of colors that can be created or reproduced on a particular device or with a certain set of beginning colors. Signed by the author.A gamut is a range of colors.

If you are an art or design student, get this book, study it, and then pester your teachers ceaselessly until THEY study it.”Ģ24 pages, softcover, 9 x 10.5 inches. “Any single book on this subject can only be an introduction, but what an introduction this is! I'm quite certain that Color and Light will mark the beginning of the end for the simplistic approach to color that still predominates in art teaching.

“ Color and Light is destined to become the new standard for artists from beginners to even the experienced artist looking to hone their skills or pick up authoritative information on any of the multitude of problems that an oil painter may encounter while practicing their craft.”

“Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter will take a place as a new standard text among books on color, destined to be a fixture on the bookshelves of painters and illustrators for years to come.”
